Does Topical Lamisil Work To Treat Toenail Fungus?

Lamisil is an over-the-counter cream that is used to treat athlete’s foot. Some people have used Lamisil to treat toenail fungus, where the fungus has caused a local infection. Does Lamisil work in the treatment of toenail fungus, or is it better for athlete’s foot?

How does it work?
Lamisil cream contains terbinfine hydrochloride, which has proven effective in ceasing the production of ergosterol in toenail fungus. Ergosterol is the foundation of any toenail fungus. Without this compound, toenail fungus will die.

Terbinafine hydrochloride is an acid, which can irritate the skin, especially with the continued use that is required when treating toenail fungus. Lamisil will need to be used for a period of time, sometimes for as long as six months, before noticeable results are seen.

Benefits of using Lamisil
Using the over-the-counter Lamisil cream has many benefits over using the oral preparation. First, the cream is easily obtained, without going to the doctor. Secondly, because the cream is applied topically, there is no risk to the internal organs, as there is with the oral Lamisil preparation. Lastly, rather than going through the entire body, the topical preparation is applied directly to the affected area, which can possibly give faster results.

So, does Lamisil cream work on Toenail Fungus?
Oral Lamisil tablets are proven effective for the treatment of toenail fungus in approximately 85 percent of the patients who take it and are able to complete the full course of treatment, which can last up to six months. Not many patients are actually able to take this medication for an extended amount of time, though, because of the very high risk of liver and/or kidney damage. When taking Lamisil tablets, patients are required to have blood tests to monitor liver function at least once per month. When liver enzymes become elevated the medication is stopped.

Lamisil cream has not been proven effective in the treatment of toenail fungus. Its labeled uses are for the treatment of ringworm, jock itch and athlete’s foot. This medication can be tried for treating toenail fungus, but it’s not clear as to whether or not it actually works.

Before trying any type of medication to treat toenail fungus, it’s important to discuss your options with a podiatrist. Some preparations may be contraindicated for people who suffer from other illnesses as well as toenail fungus. Also, regardless of the treatment that’s tried, it will take at least three months of continued treatment to see any type of results, so patience is necessary.
